“.…We All Scream for Ice Cream”

The story of ice cream begins over 3,000 years ago in China. The emperors of China were the first people that we know about who ate snow ice cream. Their cooks mixed snow and ice from the mountains with fruit, wine and honey to make a tasty treat for their rulers to enjoy.

In 1295, Marco Polo returned from China to Italy with a new recipe for making snow ice cream. His recipe called for mixing yak milk into snow in order to make it creamy. This was the beginning of using milk for snow ice cream and soon ice cream was catching on all over Europe.

After the dessert was imported to the United States, it was served by several famous Americans. During the 1700’s George Washington and Thomas Jefferson served it to their guests. Dolly Madison also served it to her White House guests in 1812.

In 1846, an American woman named Nancy Johnson invented and patented the hand-cranked ice cream freezer which established the basic method of making ice cream still used today. The most common methods for making ice cream at home are to use an electric or hand-cranked ice cream maker.
